Apples heal 
when eaten. To eat one, one needs to hold it in their hand then left click (which is why one cannot dig using an apple). They can be placed with right click, just like almost any other node.
They can be obtained from apple trees; there is a 25% chance that a tree grown from a sapling bears apples. An apple drops as an item when there is no tree trunk nearby, unless it was placed by a player.
