The Permanent Flame turns nearby flammable blocks into a Fire. Air which is both nearby a permanent flame and a flammable block will randomly turn into basic flames. See Category:Flammable for a list of flammable blocks. Notably, Chests and locked chests will not burn. Other than fire, a permanent flame does not ignite gun powder and TNT.
