Kelp is a decorative block/plant combination which grows in water or water-like blocks. It consists of two parts: At the bottom there is a solid block which looks like sand (but it's a different block, it does not fall!), and on top of that block there's the actual kelp which has a height between 4 and 6 blocks.

Natural occourance

It occours naturally in temperate and cool oceans on top of ordinary sand in shallow water in temperate and cool climates and has a height from 4 and 6 blocks.

This block is not generated in the v6 map generator.

Usage

To mine a kelp, you must point at the sand-like block at the bottom and mine it with a sword (for faster mining) or just your hand. Note the kelp itself can not be pointed.

To place a kelp, you have to put it on the bottom of a column of water-like blocks (e.g. in a lake or ocean) at a depth of at least 5 blocks. Placement may fail at a depth of 5-7 blocks because the kelp might attempt to “grow” higher and fail. In that case, just try again until the placement succeeds.

Note this will place both the sand-like block and the kelp.

Oddities

Although the base block looks like sand, it is an entirely different block. It does not fall and has different mining properties.

The kelp itself is not considered to be a block on its own, it is purely decorative. Therefore, you can normally place and build other blocks (even other plants like jungle grass) inside the kelp, but that won't affect the actual block.
