Minetestは、InfiniMinerやMinecraftなどに影響を受けたボクセルゲームを作成するために作られた自由ソフトウエアのゲームエンジンです。Perttu Ahola(別名「celeron55」)によって作り始められました。

Minetest上で動くそれぞれのGameの基本アイデアは、ほぼ共通しています。プレーヤーはブロックで構成された巨大なWorldに放り込まれます。ブロックは風景を作り出していて、このブロックを自由に壊したり、配置したりできます。アイテムを集めて、新しい道具やアイテムをクラフトすることもできます。ですが、MinetestのGameは、これよりもはるかに複雑になっています。

Minetestのコア概念は、プログラミング言語Luaによる組み込まれたMod作成機構です。Modを使うと既存のゲームの特定の部分を(一つまたはそれ以上)変更できます。MinetestのModには、装飾ブロックを追加するだけのようなシンプルなものから、複雑な新しいゲーム概念を導入したり、まったく異なる種類の世界を生成するものなど、さまざまなものがあります。プレーヤーがModをインストールするには、ファイルを展開して特定の場所にコピーしたり、MinetestのUIからいくつかボタンを押して導入する必要があります。

Minetestは、1人で遊ぶこともオンラインで複数のプレーヤーと遊ぶこともできます。

Minetestには、標準で「Minetest Game」という名前のシンプルなGameが付属しています。Minetest上で動くほかのGameで遊ぶには、Minetest公式フォーラムからダウンロードできます。(5.0以降ではゲーム内からダウンロードできます。)

Minetest(ゲームエンジンを指します)とMinetest Game(Minetest上で動くGameを指します)は、プレイ可能ですが現時点でどちらもアルファ版です。多くの機能が欠落していますしバグもあります。ですので、すべてが完全に動作しないことをお許しください。
